Our
Initiatives
Our work is specifically focused to make significant
change through several key initiatives.
Earned Income Tax Credit Initiative
Michigan, along with the rest of the nation, is in the midst of one of the deepest recessions in recent memory. As stable employment becomes increasingly difficult to find, working families and low-income individuals are struggling to make ends meet. One answer is to help eligible families and individuals access the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC.)

Individual Development
Accounts (IDA) - help low income families learn
to save and provide a financial match for participants
toward buying a first home, paying for college or
vocational school or starting a small business.

Metro Detroit's
Promise - strives to create a safe and nurturing
environment for children and youth by delivering five
promises that build character and competence, and
provide an opportunity for young people to become
involved in positively shaping their communities.

Operation ABC™- Operation ABC™, Every child a reader by grade three is a United Way for Southeastern Michigan early education initiative that brings together school districts, local unions, nonprofits, corporations and volunteers to improve the reading levels of first and second graders in metro Detroit. This community-based initiative will recruit and train 2,000 volunteers and mobilize them in classrooms across the region as reading tutors. Each volunteer will be required to commit between one and five hours of time a week beginning in 2008.

Pontiac Neighborhood
Youth Initiative (PNYI) - aims to increase
access to and provision of quality, neighborhood-centered
community support services that help young people
in defined Pontiac neighborhoods graduate from high
school and prepare for responsible adulthood.

Success by Six®
- brings together families, community resources and
services to ensure that children enter school ready
to succeed.

Virgil H. Carr School
Attendance Initiative - will work at the middle
school level to increase student attendance in order
to better students' chances of success in school
and life.

Women's Initiative
Leadership Giving Program - focuses on improving
early childhood literacy levels in our region through
programs that promote early childhood development.

Working Together! Employment,
Training and Family Resource Expo
More than just a job fair, the event is an opportunity to receive the training and tools necessary to secure
and retain a job; a chance to learn about employment opportunities both locally and
beyond our community; and a place to find out about human service resources that are available
to assist individuals and families achieve independence and succeed
in life.
